Arts Award: Discover

What is the Arts Award?

The Arts Award inspires young people to grow their arts and leadership talents: it's creative, valuable and accessible.

How to complete the Discover Award at Peterborough Museum?

Each young person will need to attend 2 sessions (each 1.5 hours long) to complete the Discover Award: Part 1: Discover & Find Out and Part 2: Discover & Share. These can be booked on the same day, one after the other, or on different weekends.

The emphasis is on a young person’s individual journey and not about reaching a certain level of artistic skill.

Part 1: Discover & Find Out
  • This will introduce our Arts Award activity booklet to the group, allow time to read over instructions and be a chance to ask questions to the session facilitator.
  • Attendees hunt for different artforms around the building and find out about the work of Nathan Fielding (artwork on permanent display).
Part 2: Discover & Share
  • Create a new artwork by combining artworks together inspired by those on display.
  • Attendees share work with their grownups or others in the group and the facilitator.

How much does it cost?

£5 per session (Both part 1 and part 2 sessions need to be booked and attended to successfully complete the Arts Award) All attendees need to be accompanied by at least 1 adult for the entirety of the session.

Meet our Arts Award facilitator:

Each session will have an education space as a ‘base’ here at the Museum. Our Arts Award facilitator, Natalie, is in attendance the entire time.

Natalie is a trained Arts Award assessor and former secondary Art Teacher. As the Children's Learning Officer at the Museum, she helps develop the education programme, alongside teaching the visiting school groups. Her artistic skills are used to illustrate educational resources and public engagement material.

FAQs

How old do you need to be to take part?

This is aimed at children aged 5-11 but can be completed by anyone under the age of 25.

What can I expect at each session?

Sessions have an education space as a ‘base’ here at the Museum. An Arts Award facilitator is in attendance the entire time.

The activities are completed within an Arts Award booklet, which is given during the Part 1 session. Additional artwork can be added to this. The booklets have been created to ensure all the assessment objectives for the Award are covered fully.

Aside from an introduction and ending to the group, the sessions run at the pace of each individual family group: self-led time to look around the Museum and Gallery, use the art resources in the Education room and speak to the facilitator for support and to share work.

Belongings can be left in the Education room at your own discretion, and you are welcome to bring food and drinks to have whilst you sit and work. No food or drink however should be taken into the Museum galleries.

Once both sessions have been attended, the booklet (and any supporting work) is handed in to be marked. The facilitator will ensure they look at each participant’s booklet during the Part 2 session before they leave. Extra time can be given afterwards on request or, if booking across different weekends, time can be spent at home in-between Part 1 and Part 2.

When does my child receive their certificate?

All young people, who complete all sections of the booklet to a satisfactory level, will receive an official Arts Award certificate from Trinity College London.

Each young person will receive a certificate along with their completed Arts Award booklet in the post. Please allow time for this to happen as marking periods will be at the end of August and the end of November. You will be notified by email when certificates are on their way.

Does an adult need to be present?

All individuals or groups need to be accompanied by at least 1 adult for the entirety of the session.

How much is it?

£5 per session (Both part 1 and part 2 sessions need to be booked and attended to successfully complete the Arts Award)

How many people will be in each session?

There will be a maximum of 12 young people per session - this does not include accompanying adults.

Do you need to be good at art?

No ability level is required to complete this award. If your child may need additional educational support, please let us know in advance.
