Gleanings: The art of the past

Ferraby's collection

The monuments, earthworks and buried remains of archaeology in the landscape invite our curiosity. They inspire ways of interpreting and retelling interwoven stories through time. As an artist and archaeologist, Rose Ferraby explores different elements of our archaeological past, piecing together and layering stories and evidence in her images. Ferraby’s painted collages and prints explore a range of sites and landscapes, from secretive peatlands to our dynamic coasts.

The exhibition includes new work about some of East Anglia’s intriguing archaeological landscapes, and finds inspiration in the extraordinary collections held in the Peterborough Museum. Additionally, selected pieces of Rose Ferraby's artwork will be available to purchase.

Talks

Gold from the Time of Stonehenge
Dr David Dawson, Director of Wiltshire Museum

Tuesday 19 May | 7:30pm

The Wiltshire Museum is the home of the best Bronze Age collections in Britain, including the amazing objects buried with the people who lived at the time of Stonehenge. William Cunnington, a pioneer of archaeology, excavated 200 Bronze Age burial mounds in the Stonehenge landscape and across Wiltshire. The objects have been the subject of research for 200 years since they were excavated, and current research is still revealing new information, including details of links across Europe and details of stunning craft skills.

A number of pieces by Rose Ferraby in the Gleanings exhibition feature archaeological sites in Wiltshire. Rose's work was also the subject of an exhibition at Wiltshire Museum in late 2025-early 2026. David has been the Director of the award-winning Wiltshire Museum in Devizes since 2008. He is an archaeologist who has worked in museums in Sussex, Canterbury and Oxfordshire, as well as in cultural policy at a national level.

Gleanings: the art of the past
Artist’s Talk with Rose Ferraby
Saturday 9 May | 3pm

Archaeology invites our curiosity, inspiring us to find ways of interpreting and retelling stories through time. As an archaeologist and artist, Rose Ferraby explores different elements of our archaeological past. In this artist’s talk, she will discuss how archaeology and art intertwine as ways of exploring and knowing our landscapes. Rose will take us through her process, and the making of different pieces of work. The richly illustrated talk will touch on some of her past projects – from Seahenge to bog bodies – as well as her new work about the archaeology of the Fens.

Dr Rose Ferraby's work often explores the relationship between people and landscape through time. She is interested in how to tell different stories about the past; how to inspire people and create ways in which they can imagine past and future worlds. She does this through a whole range of work, from projects with museums and heritage organisations, writing and presenting for radio, illustrating and designing books.

Tickets: £5 per person
